Fisheries Co-management and Freshwater Biodiversity Protection

Funded by The Nature Conservancy (TNC) since September 2024, our Fisheries Co-Management and Freshwater Biodiversity Protection Project aims to enhance the sustainability of Lake Tanganyika’s aquatic ecosystems, support local communities, and foster the sustainable use of fisheries resources within the Kala Key Biodiversity Area (KBA). Located along the southeastern shoreline of Lake Tanganyika in Nkasi District, Rukwa Region, Tanzania, the Kala KBA is a crucial freshwater resource that sustains local livelihoods, ensures food security, and holds significant cultural value. However, its ecosystems are under threat due to unsustainable fishing practices and environmental degradation.

This project is designed to restore and protect freshwater biodiversity through innovative co-management strategies, collaborative governance, and active community involvement. The partnership between CEELS and TNC focuses on establishing Co-Management Institutions in the villages of Mpasa, Tundu, Kala, and Kilambo cha Mkolechi, all located within the Kala ward. By fostering stakeholder collaboration and promoting sustainable fishing practices, the initiative aims to strengthen the resilience of freshwater ecosystems in the Kala KBA, safeguarding its unique biodiversity for future generations.

The key activities being implemented include actively engaging the community through meetings and training sessions to raise awareness about the importance of sustainable fisheries management and biodiversity conservation. Additionally, capacity building for the leaders of co-management institutions, such as Beach Management Units (BMUs), is being prioritized to strengthen local leadership and governance structures. Support is also being provided for the designation of fish breeding areas and temporarily closed areas, which are crucial for improving the health of lake ecosystems, ensuring the long-term viability of fish populations, and promoting sustainable resource use. Together, these efforts are essential for fostering collaborative management and the sustainable stewardship of fisheries resources.

Expected Outcomes

  • Improved fish stock health and biodiversity in Lake Tanganyika, specifically within the Kala KBA
  • Stronger collaboration among local communities, government agencies, and environmental organizations in managing lake resources.
  • Empowered local communities equipped with the knowledge to sustainably manage fisheries and conserve freshwater ecosystems.
  • Enhanced long-term environmental sustainability and better livelihoods for local residents.
